Did you know that only 6 per cent of care leavers from England are in higher education at the age of 19, compared to 38 per cent of the general population?
In Scotland, only 5 per cent of care leavers go to university straight from school, compared to 36 per cent of their peers and only 53% of care leavers complete their further education course.
Propel aims to address these issues by helping more care experienced young people enter college and university and complete their course.
Propel is run by Become - a national charity which supports young people in care and care leavers. For the past three years we've collated information from institutions in our vital publications - the Higher Education Handbook for Care Leavers and The Scottish College Handbook. Propel - an interactive web version – aims to build on its success and include all the institutions which provide higher education in the UK.
Each institution has its own dedicated page containing an overview of the support it offers to care leavers, for example finance and funding, accommodation and application support, and includes additional information gathered by Unistats too.
If the information on the support you offer for care leavers has not already been submitted by your institution, we would be delighted if your university or college would support this initiative.
You can submit your entry here, where you'll also find additional guidance on how to complete your submission.
The form takes around 15 minutes to complete and inclusion in Propel is completely free.
If you have any questions, want to make changes to your existing entry or would like to discuss your institution’s involvement in more detail, please feel free to contact the Propel team.
