You can contact us for support as early as you would like, even before you apply to the college. We can talk you through the different course types and offer advice on which course might be right for you as well as guidance on careers options and financial support.

Personal Achievement Tutors to provide weekly tutorial sessions, as well as 1-2-1 guidance and pastoral support, money management and independent living throughout the academic year. Personal Achievement Tutors are specifically trained to support care leavers.

Students can access college Counselling services, with priority status given care leavers, and wellbeing zones are available to students.

There are additional learning support teams available for students with learning needs

The Student Services Team provide high quality impartial advice to students which continues after students leave us. The Student Services Careers team meet with all LAC/care leaver learners three times throughout the year to ensure specific careers advice and guidance/additional support. Drop in sessions are also available for learners.

Work Placement Coordinators are available to support care leavers with opportunities to enter the world of work through work experience placements.

The Bedford College Group offers means tested based on household income. A hardship fund is also available. This is discretionary, and applications are considered based on individual need, but special considerations is given to care leavers.

The Bedford College Group offer a Care Leavers Bursary for all Care Leavers or former Looked After Children who enroll onto a Higher National Certificate (HNC) course at one of our sites. The bursary is a one off payment of £500. We offer HNCs in the Arts, Business, Computing, Construction, Engineering, Land Based Studies, and Science.

A Care Leaver is defined as an adult who has spent time living in the care system, away from their family. This could with a foster family, in a children's home or supported housing service, or under another arrangement as agreed by their social worker. Young people usually leave care when they are 18 years old.

A Looked After Child (LAC) is a child who has been in the care of their local authority for more than 24 hours. Looked After Children are also often referred to as Children In Care.
