The details of support available can change, so before you apply it's best to speak to the named contact to check exactly what they offer.
The University of Reading held the Buttle UK Quality Mark, and is still committed to providing fair access, information, advice and guidance for prospective students who have spent time in local authority care. Before you apply, you have priority access to all our outreach activities, including the Reading scholars' programme. We can also offer you flexible application arrangements: for example a range of interview dates/times. Student support services will make contact with you after you have accepted your offer for Reading, to outline the support available to you throughout your studies.
We offer careers advice and support from day one of your degree through to 18 months after graduation.
Care leavers have priority for university accommodation, and we waive your deposit until the first instalment of your student loan has been paid. You'll also receive a start-up package of essential household items to get you started. Once you have joined the university, you can contact the university welfare officer or student union representative at any time to discuss any support you need.

When you fill in your UCAS form, be sure to tick the box to allow sharing of this information with the university. We will then contact you to get everything sorted. When you come to Reading, talks during welcome week cover the financial support you may be eligible for, and you can make an individual appointment to talk about your specific circumstances.
Before coming to university, you can apply for travel bursaries to help you attend open days, post-offer visit days and/or interviews.
We work with the Unite Foundation to offer 365 days of free accommodation to selected students – you can find out more about this at: www.unitefoundation.co.uk.
