The details of support available can change, so before you apply it's best to speak to the named contact to check exactly what they offer.

Strathclyde Cares is our range of support and activities specifically for those from looked-after backgrounds. We are committed to encouraging more applications and supporting our care leavers once they are students with us.

We are happy to provide tours of the university and subject departments, and our care adviser, Debbie Duncan, can talk you through the application process. It is sometimes possible for us to make lower offers of entry to those who have spent time in care, to recognise the additional barriers you might have faced during your education.

As a student with us, you can receive year-round accommodation, you will be guaranteed an interview to become a student ambassador, and you will be matched with a mentor – a friendly member of staff who will support and advise you throughout your time with us. We can also help with graduation costs when you are ready for the next stage of your career.

Support we offer

  • A named contact
  • Outreach sessions or activities
  • Pre-application help
  • Guidance for offer holders
  • A web page for care leavers

The University of Strathclyde works in partnership with charitable organisations such as The Robertson Trust and Unite Foundation, offering financial and accommodation scholarships to care-experienced young people, as well as our own Strathclyde Cares scholarships.

We work with Unite Foundation to offer 365 days of free accommodation to selected students  – you can find out more about this at: If you indicate a care-experienced background on your UCAS application, and receive an offer to study an undergraduate degree at the University of Strathclyde, our named care adviser will contact you. Our student finance office is also able to provide advice and support on financial matters.
