The details of support available can change, so before you apply it's best to speak to the named contact to check exactly what they offer.

At the University of York we are committed to providing the support our students need, so that everyone achieves their full potential and has an exceptional and transformational experience. A contextual offer for all care experienced students - this is up to two grades below the standard offer
A guaranteed interview for any courses that interview
Support when you first arrive
Financial support
Free accommodation and flexible accommodation contracts
Support renting private sector accommodation
Study skills support
Emotional support

Fran Hornsby, our dedicated care leavers’ contact once you are here, will stay in touch with you throughout your time at York to make sure you are enjoying and getting the most out of your time at university. You can contact Fran at any time, even if you just fancy a cup of tea and a chat! For further information about any of the above, please visit our care leavers' webpage.

We offer an accommodation subsidy for the duration of the course. This is £130 per week and is now available for off campus accommodation as well as on campus. We also offer a care leaver bursary for students who meet the following criteria:

you are studying an Undergraduate degree course
you are a home UK student
you will be under 25 on the first day of your university course
you have care leaver status and have been assessed as a care leaver by student finance. This means you will have been in care for at least 13 weeks at any time since the age of 14 (the period of 13 weeks does not need to be all in one go). If you are unsure whether you have care leaver status you should check with your leaving care team or personal adviser; you can also get more information here.

The total value of the bursary is £3,000 in the first year, and £2,500 in subsequent years (plus £1,000 in your final term to assist with graduation and interview costs). The bursary can be used for a range of opportunities or activities. Examples include (this is not an exhaustive list): driving lessons, childcare, funding an internship, travel costs, study materials, and Students’ Union society activities.
